Why Did My IP Analysis Fail?

Identity and Purity (IP) analyses typically fail for one of the following reasons:

  • Contamination – the sample contains unintended substances.
  • Co-elution – impurities elute together with the main compound and cannot be separated.
  • Degradation – the compound has broken down before or during analysis.

Failed Analysis

An analysis is classified as Failed when one of the following criteria is met:

Incorrect Identity

The molecular weight and/or chemical structure does not match the compound it is claimed to be.

Low Purity

The purity of the active ingredient is below the acceptance threshold.

Acceptance criterion: ≥ 85% purity

Why Was My Compound Classified as Suspect?

A compound is classified as Suspect when the analytical data is not sufficiently conclusive to confirm the result.

Incorrect Identity

Some compounds ionize poorly, making it difficult to detect the expected molecular mass.

Intermediate Purity

Compounds with a purity between 50% and 85% are designated as Suspect until a second analysis has been performed.

This verification step helps ensure that the result is not influenced by analytical artifacts related to sample handling, preparation, or materials.

Inconclusive Results

Certain molecular structures are challenging to analyze using the standard IP workflow. In these cases, additional analytical methods may be required to confirm or reject the compound.


A Note on the IP Method

The IP method is designed to be fast, robust, and applicable to a broad range of molecules. However, no single analytical method is suitable for every compound.

In some cases, the analysis may produce no conclusive result. This means that the available data is insufficient to either confirm or reject the compound, and additional analytical techniques may be required.
